Kabale University is licensed and gazetted by the Uganda National Council for Higher Education. A community-owned and secular institution, KAB endeavours to be all-inclusive in all its operations, irrespective of gender, ethnicity, region or religion.
Those of us who are charged with the development of the University are proud that we are growing beyond our projections. Having admitted our 42 pioneer students in 2002, our expectations were to enrol 1000 by 2009. We have already surpassed the 3000 mark. Initially, our catchment area in terms of our students comprised of South-Western Uganda. We now get students from all regions of Uganda, with about 60 districts represented. The number of our international students, mainly from the Francophone group of the Great Lakes Region, is now over 1000.
We are indeed on track as we move towards fulfilling our mandate of providing quality higher education to previously deprived areas and opening up opportunities for resource-poor communities. Despite our being in the foundation stage, KAB offers scholarships to undergraduate students through its Work-Study Programme; and annual awards to one female and one male student from the Districts of Kabale, Kanungu, Kisoro and Rukungiri (formerly known as Kigezi region).
Although KAB is officially categorised as a Private University, this is only so in the sense that it is not founded by the Central Government of Uganda. It is a public institution, in terms of its foundation - by the Local Governments of the Districts of Kabale, Kanungu, Kisoro and Rukungiri; through its ownership – by the Community, through the Assembly of Promoters; and on the basis of volunteers who serve on all its various governing bodies. We are proud of the high-level composition of the membership of our promoters, but more so of their indisputable commitment and devotion to the development of KAB. In addition, academic programmes are developed with a view to responding to the needs of the society. For example, studies in environment and tourism, languages, technology, etc are all relevant to the needs of society, and are aimed at creating positive change, in partnership with the community.
The growth so far achieved is attributable to the collective efforts and enthusiasm of students, staff, promoters and the community. The principles which guide Kabale University towards the realization of its core purpose include: innovative problem-based learning, institutional efficiency and effectiveness, ethics, inclusiveness and quality assurance. The serene environment and cool climate provides a conducive learning environment throughout the year. Affordable accommodation, both at Campus and within Kabale Municipality can be easily accessed.
The following broad academic themes have been agreed as key areas for specialization by Kabale University, as it grows - Rural transformation studies; Languages and Anthropology; Science, Mathematics and Technology; Natural Resource Management; Outreach and Community Service; Health Sciences; Public Affairs Management; Business Studies, Entrepreneurship and Tourism; Teacher Education.
I warmly welcome all potential students and staff to this fast-growing community of scholars. Kabale University is the place to be if you are driven by a pioneering spirit; and the values of integrity; resourcefulness; equity and equality; transparency; solidarity.
