MSI Program

KABALE UNIVERSITY MSI PROJECT

Kabale University won competitive funding from the World Bank and the Government of Uganda, under the Millennium Science Initiative (MSI), in September, 2007 for a program designed to upgrade secondary teachers of Science and Mathematics from a diploma qualification to degree status. The title of our Proposal is: Enhancing Curricular Connectedness in Mathematics Science and Technology: An In-Service, Gender-Sensitive Secondary Teachers' Program.

Program Objectives

Through the program:

1. Students will learn to identify intra- and inter-subject connections within the Mathematics, Science
    and Technology subject cluster.
2. Students will obtain knowledge and skills to teach their subjects with intra-and inter-subject
connectedness.
3. Gender equity will be pursued in the student recruitment
4. Material suitable for pertinent teaching and learning will be developed
5. Successful students will graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Education.

Recruitment of Students

The general criteria for a student to be admitted into the program have been as follows. The student should:

1. be a citizen of Uganda
2. have successfully completed a diploma in Education, in one of Teachers Colleges in Uganda, having
offered two teaching subjects from Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics
3. have taught for at least two years at a secondary school in Uganda after their diploma award and
a specific requirement for students admitted into the program under a tuition waiver has been
    that the student should:
4. pass a competitive selection test; set, administered and marked by Kabale University.

Funding Duration and Program Duration

The duration of the funding for this Project is four years and officially ends on January 02 2012. The duration of the academic program for this project is 3 years. This means that only two intakes will finish their program within the life time of the Project funding from the World Bank and Government of Uganda.

Project Institutionalization by Kabale University

As the Project funding comes to an end, Kabale University has planned to subsume the project program, with its essential pedagogic characteristics, into her mainstream programs. This would entail admission of students into the program provided those students fulfill criteria 2) and 3) from the list above. Such students would not be required to fulfill criteria 1) and 4) above but they would pay tuition fees.
