Kabale University holds a lot of potential
Kabale University is strategically located at crossroads to Rwanda, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo(DRC). Within a radius of 200km from Kabale Town, there are more than twenty (20) million inhabitants. This means that the university has a large catchment area, which includes the former Kigezi District, most of the former Ankole District, Rwanda, and parts of Burundi, Tanzania and the DRC.
The location of Kabale University in an area which is characterised by cool weather is highly advantageous. Cool weather is favourable for academic endeavours, as it energizes the human body and keeps the mind alert.
Currently, Kabale University owns nearly 150acres of land. Such an expanse of land shall enable protracted expansion for the institution.
In order to address current and evolving educational demands, Kabale University academic programmes are dynamically tailored towards issues beyond borders of traditional disciplines and most are demand- driven. Some of the demand-driven academic programmes include those geared towards the enhancement of tourism, business administration and entrepreneurship, project planning and management, population studies, human resource management, computer science and information technology, utilisation of international languages (English, French, and Kiswahili), land use and environment science, plus mineral and petroleum exploitation.
Considering that language is a vehicle of knowledge, training in French, Kiswahili and English is progressively being strengthened across other academic programmes to meet the professional needs of the multilingual communities in the Great Lakes Region and beyond.
Kabale University nestles in the south-western tourism zone of Uganda, which is cherished by countless tourists. This zone is famous for its unique biodiversity including among others the mountain gorillas of Mgahinga and Bwindi forests. The biodiversity is complemented by unique physical features such as the rift valley, volcanoes, lava-dammed lakes and an evergreen hilly terrain. Therefore, by providing ecological and tourism programmes, Kabale University contributes to the provision of practical skills for sustainable exploitation of this potential.
Aggressive recruitment of quality administrative and highly qualified academic staff was embarked on from the outset of the University. This enables effective running of the university and efficient designing of essential academic programmes which is further enhanced by vigorous engagement in academic research by staff members. In all education processes, including content, quality assurance, which is a distinct function, is a highly prized factor at Kabale University.
In addition to programmes and staffing, regional and international relationships are being established and maintained through extending matrices of collaboration with other institutions such as the National University of Rwanda (NUR), Kigali Institute of Science and Technology (KIST), Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST), and Rwanda National Examinations Council. There is so much intellectual vitality across and within these institutions and countries that Kabale University is harnessing. For ease of coordination, the University is considering establishing campuses at strategically selected locations in the region. This will further enable Kabale University to provide and knowledge products that meet internationally recognised education standards.
Kigezi region has an incredible array of professionals and business practitioners who are on the cutting-edge in many fields. A subset of them constitutes the Assembly of Promoters for the university. This means that intellectual, business and economic challenges will be met in the most informed way with utmost resilience.
