Guidance and Counselling

GUIDANCE AND COUNSELLING is not only offered as a study programme at Kabale University but also utilized to help students cope with educational and psychosocial challenges. Kabale University staff members are well equipped with academic and counselling skills to enable students acquire life skills.

The essential skills imparted are: self-esteem, self-mastery, managing emotions, problem solving, self-development, personal integrity, conflict resolution, decision making and relating with others through interpersonal communication. Many students do not clearly understand who they are in terms of their weaknesses and strengths. They are helped to identify and overcome personal weaknesses, and to recognise and build on their strengths by taking advantage of intrinsic personal potentials and opportunities at their disposal. Thus, students are helped to determine what they want to be in life and work towards achieving it.

Since every human relationship is potentially important to the wellbeing of an individual, we maintain amicable relationship with our students in order to support them to overcome psychosocial issues and concentrate on their studies and co-curricular activities. Besides the desire to inculcate knowledge and model behaviour, we endeavour to understand the students regarding their wellbeing and developmental stages before embarking on counselling. Our key attributes in counselling are: empathy, non-judgmental attitude and genuineness, confidentiality, recognizing and dealing with students emotions, overcoming transference and counter transference. We also appreciate the fact that people are different; they come from different cultural backgrounds, have different home environments and different personalities. Therefore, while interacting with students and/or attempting to help them, we keep these differences in mind so as to achieve what we wish our students to be. The same fire that melts the butter hardens the egg.

In a nutshell, students are equipped with knowledge and skills to manage themselves so as to live safely and effectively face physical, emotional, economic and social challenges in life. Hence, Kabale University produces knowledgeable, skilled, humble and disciplined citizens with aspirations and visions to achieve personal fulfilment as well as performing duties and according respect towards other people.
