Accomodation and Board Facilities at Kabale University

Kabale University currently has the capacity to accommodate only two hundred students on campus (both males and females). The rest of the students are non-residents, living in off- campus, private housing. With the ever-increasing number of students enrolling at the university, and considering the growing demand for on-campus housing, the university will soon construct a marvellous hostel which shall accommodate over 500 female students. Male students will then occupy all existing hostels. Measures to build ultra modern hostels in the near future are underway.

The existing hostels are equipped to accommodate both males and females. They are furnished with furniture (bare beds, chairs, reading desks) and curtains. Currently, resident students carry along with them their own mattresses and other beddings.

A big number of the non-residents stay in their private homes around Kabale Town and the neighbouring villages. The others whose homes are far away from the university campus normally get accommodation from private commercial providers within Kabale Municipality. Like residents, non-residents are equally represented on the Students’ Guild Council. Their concerns are adequately addressed by either the Guild Council and/or the University Management. The Office of the Dean of Students keeps in touch with all students - residents and non-residents - at all times. Students are able to reach the Dean or the Custodians by telephone even at night. The Custodians keep records about all students and their inquiries.

Water and electricity are accessed by everyone on campus. There is running water on campus supplied by both the Uganda National Water and Sewerage Cooperation, and Gravity Water harnessed from a natural spring and distributed by Rushoroza Parish. Electricity is obtained from the Jinja National Grid, and the University has two standby generators. Thus, our students can read books and carry out all academic assignments twenty-four hours a day.

Under close supervision by the Dean of Students and custodians, there are several sanitary cleaners who ensure that there is cleanliness in and around the hostels and other university premises. Students also recognize that they have a role to play; they make sure that they keep their environment clean to avoid preventable illnesses.

There is also a plan to build a strong perimeter fence to ensure security of the students and their property. The Chairperson of the security committee, The Resident District Commissioner of Kabale District, in conjunction with The District Police Commander, is always in touch with the University Administration concerning security matters. While security breaches have not been a problem on and around campus, very soon a police post will be operational in the vicinity of the university to ensure law and order on campus and the surrounding areas.

As Habakkuk 2:1-3 reads: & for the vision is yet for an appointed time but at the end it will speak, and it will not lie. Though it tarries, wait for it: because it will surely come, and it will not tarry.
